A white tiger at Liberec Zoo

Liberec Zoo

The oldest zoo in the Czech Republic — and the home of the white tigers

Liberec Zoo sits among old trees in the Lidové sady district, a pleasant tram ride from the centre. It grew out of a bird garden founded by local nature-lovers in the early 1900s and has been a full zoological garden since 1919, which is why it is generally described as the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic.

It is not large, and that is part of the appeal: you can see everything in a relaxed morning. The zoo made its name with white tigers and has a long record of breeding birds of prey and animals from high mountains.

What to see and do: Liberec Zoo

See the white tigers

The zoo’s best-known residents and its unofficial emblem. Liberec was the first Czech zoo to keep them.

Follow the circuit

A single looping path leads past big cats, giraffes, primates, mountain animals and aviaries. The site is on a gentle slope; allow two to three hours with children. Species on show change over time, so check the zoo’s own map on arrival.

Birds of prey

Liberec has specialised in raptors for decades and takes part in European breeding and reintroduction programmes. The large aviaries are among the most interesting parts of the zoo.

Feeding times and children’s corner

Commented feedings run in the main season, and there is a children’s zoo and playgrounds. Times are posted at the entrance.

Combine it

The botanical garden is five minutes’ walk away and the North Bohemian Museum is on the way back to the centre along Masarykova avenue, an elegant street of villas. Together they make a full day without a car.

How to get to Liberec Zoo

  • Take the tram to the Lidové sady terminus (the zoo stop is just before it); the ride from Fügnerova takes around ten minutes.
  • On foot from the town hall it is about 2 km, gently uphill along Masarykova avenue.
  • There is paid parking near the entrance, which fills on summer weekends.

Insider tips

  • Arrive at opening time in July and August — animals are more active and paths are quiet.
  • The zoo is open all year; winter visits are cheaper and calm, though some animals stay indoors.
  • Tickets are bought at the gate or on the zoo’s website, not through tour platforms.
  • Ask about combined tickets with the botanical garden if you plan both.
