Best Time to Visit Liberec

February for skiers, June and September for walkers, October for colour — and something to do indoors in every month.

Liberec has no closed season. The zoo, iQLANDIA, Babylon and the museums are open all year, and the mountains simply change their use: ski trails from about late December to March, footpaths and cycle routes the rest of the time. What does change is the weather — this is one of the rainier and snowier corners of the country.

The short answer: come from May to early October for walking, cycling and castles, and from January to early March for snow.

The year at a glance

Temperatures are typical daytime values in the city; the Jizera plateau and the top of Ještěd are several degrees colder.

Winter: December to March

The Jizera Mountains are the Czech Republic’s cross-country skiing heartland. When the snow is down — reliably from January, often from late December, usually into March — the Jizerská magistrála is groomed daily and Bedřichov fills with skiers. The Jizerská 50 race in February is the biggest weekend of the year: book accommodation early or avoid it. Downhill skiers use the slopes on Ještěd and the small resorts in the mountains.

In the city, Advent brings a Christmas market to the town hall square. January and February are the months for temperature inversions, when the valley lies under cloud and Ještěd floats above it in sunshine — one of the great sights of the region.

Spring: April to June

April is unsettled and the high trails are wet with snowmelt, but the city’s parks and the botanical garden are at their best and prices are low. From May the forest roads are dry enough for cycling, the castles are fully open, and June brings long evenings and cotton grass on the peat bogs.

Summer: July and August

Warm rather than hot, with frequent showers and the odd thunderstorm — carry a waterproof. This is the season for the rock towns of the Bohemian Paradise, for swimming in the reservoirs at Jablonec and Liberec, and for bilberries on the plateau. It is also the Czech school holiday, so the zoo, iQLANDIA and Hrubá Skála are at their busiest; go early in the day.

Autumn: September to November

September is often the most settled month of the year. In October the beech forests on the northern slopes of the Jizera Mountains turn copper and gold, and the air is clear enough to see the Krkonoše from Ještěd. By November the days are short and grey, some castles have closed for the winter, and the city turns indoors.

Dates worth knowing

  • February: the Jizerská 50 cross-country race at Bedřichov — thousands of skiers, full hotels.
  • May: Anifilm, the international festival of animated film, which has been held in Liberec in recent years.
  • July–August: Czech school holidays; open-air events and festivals in the city and at the castles.
  • Late November–December: Advent market on the town hall square.
  • Winter season (roughly November–March): many Czech castles close or open only at weekends. Sychrov normally stays open year-round; check Frýdlant before you go.
  • Mondays: museums, galleries and most castles are closed.

So when should you come?

  • For cross-country skiing: mid-January to late February, midweek if you can.
  • For walking and cycling: late May, June and September.
  • For Ještěd views: a cold, clear day in autumn or winter — check the webcam first.
  • With children: any time; pair one outdoor and one indoor sight each day and the weather stops mattering.
  • For castles: May to September, when all tour routes are running.
  • On a budget: March, April and November.

When to visit: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Liberec?

September for a mix of city and mountains in settled weather; February if you come to ski.

When is there snow in the Jizera Mountains?

Usually from late December or January until March on the plateau. Conditions vary from year to year — check the trail-grooming report before you travel.

Does it rain a lot?

More than in Prague. The mountains catch the weather from the north-west, so pack a waterproof in every season — and plan one indoor sight per day.

Is Liberec worth visiting in winter if I do not ski?

Yes. The indoor attractions are open, the Advent market is pleasant, and a clear winter day on Ještěd is unforgettable.

Are the castles open all year?

Sychrov normally is. Frýdlant and most other castles in the region have a main season from spring to autumn. Always check, and remember that Monday is the usual closing day.
