Why Liberec?

The Czech Republic’s northern capital, an hour from Prague

Liberec is a city of about a hundred thousand people in a green basin between two mountain ranges. Above it stands Ještěd, whose futuristic tower is one of the great buildings of 20th-century Europe; below, a town hall modelled on Vienna’s, villas of textile barons and one of the country’s best science centres.

It works in any weather and any season. Families get the zoo, iQLANDIA and the Babylon water park; walkers and cross-country skiers are on the Jizera Mountains plateau in half an hour; castle-lovers have Sychrov and Frýdlant; and the sandstone rock towns of the Bohemian Paradise are a short train ride south. This guide covers all of it, honestly — including the current situation with the Ještěd cable car.

Good to know

Visiting Liberec: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Where is Liberec?

In the north of the Czech Republic, about 100 km north-east of Prague and roughly 20 km from both the German and the Polish border. It is the capital of the Liberec Region and the fifth-largest Czech city.

How do you pronounce Liberec and Ještěd?

Roughly “LI-beh-rets” and “YESH-tyed”. The historical German name of the city is Reichenberg, and you will still see it on old buildings and in German timetables.

How many days do I need?

One full day covers the town hall square, Ještěd and one of the big indoor attractions. Two or three days add the zoo, the museums and a day in the Jizera Mountains or the Bohemian Paradise. See our travel guide for itineraries.

Can I visit Liberec as a day trip from Prague?

Easily. Direct buses from Praha Černý Most take a little over an hour and run all day — see getting here. Guided private trips from Prague are listed on our best tours page.

Is the Ještěd cable car running?

Not at the time of writing. It has been out of service since a fatal accident in October 2021 and a replacement is being prepared. You can still reach the summit on foot, by road or by seasonal bus — see our Ještěd page and check the current status before you go.

Do I need Czech crowns?

The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK). Cards are accepted almost everywhere in the city; carry some cash for mountain huts, car parks and small kiosks.
